What level of care is right?

As we progress through life’s journey our views, needs and requirements change and planning your future is an important part of ensuring that you continue to thrive as you get older.

Actually understanding what you need is really important and the key to making the best choices is to match your housing with your lifestyle, health, and financial needs. This may mean modifying your own home to make it safer and more comfortable, or it could mean moving to a retirement village with more support and social options available on site.

If you are thinking about a retirement village there are a number of options to consider. The Selwyn Foundation offers a range of villas, apartments and rental accommodation for those who can live independently.

If you require help with physical needs including activities of daily living you may be eligible for rest home or even hospital care. There are a number of options available to you through The Selwyn Foundation. However to access rest home or hospital care you must be assessed by a Government-appointed Needs Assessor (NASC) before they can be admitted to rest homes or hospitals. If this is something you think you may need, ask your GP for a NASC referral.

Residents may be totally or partially funded by the New Zealand Government (this is subject to means testing).
