The Selwyn Foundations charitable outreach provides housing for older Aucklanders

Affordable Housing for Senior Citizens

Offering total support to older people is one of our greatest strengths.

The most challenging social issues facing older people now are the shortages of affordable, good quality housing and the debilitating effects of loneliness, both of which have implications for health and wellbeing.

The Selwyn Foundation currently has 31 cottages in Selwyn Village and Hansen Close and 11 suites within its Selwyn House community living residence in Birkenhead, Auckland that are let at subsidised rental rates. The charitable rate equates to between 30%-35% of Superannuation.

Expanding our services to become a Community Housing Provider

The Selwyn Foundation has been looking at innovative ways to expand our services, so we can help greater numbers of elderly who need the security of a home and who are isolated and struggling. Always looking for opportunities to make a difference, The Selwyn Foundation successfully applied to the Community Housing Regulatory Authority and became an officially registered Community Housing Provider (CHP).

We can now support tenants who face financial hardship by accessing the Ministry of Social Development’s income-related rent subsidy.

Partnering with Auckland Council

Our status as a Community Housing Provider allowed us to submit a Request for Proposal in relation to Auckland Council’s Housing for Older People services.

We were subsequently named as the council's preferred community housing partner for homes for older Aucklanders. This partnership enables us to contribute to the future of affordable housing and to create safe, thriving and age-friendly communities and also provide additional services for the benefit of older people in need.

The joint venture between The Selwyn Foundation and the Auckland Council has as its vision:

“To be a provider of outstanding community housing for Auckland’s older people”

The partnership unlocks greater potential for The Selwyn Foundation to help and support a much larger proportion of our older population.

Through the joint venture company, Haumaru Housing Limited Partnership, we aim to provide outstanding housing for older Aucklanders, where houses are homes, streets are communities and tenants are well served and content where they live and with the services they receive.

This partnership is as much about securing the futures of older people and enhancing their wellbeing, as it is about housing. It goes to the heart of the Foundation’s charitable purpose – improving the lives of the more vulnerable, aged members of our society.

Haumaru Housing took over operation of Auckland Council’s Housing for Older People service on 1 July 2017. If you would like to apply for housing, you can contact Haumaru Housing now on 0800 430 101 or email: info@haumaruhousing.co.nz or visit their website www.haumaruhousing.co.nz.
