Wairuatanga
"Across all areas of our missional outreach – from the Selwyn Support programme to the thriving Selwyn Centres and the deepening conversations around end-of-life – the Foundation continues to respond to the needs of seniors who may be lonely or experiencing other forms of disadvantage, in partnership with our Anglican communities. In this, we are guided by our abiding commitments to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and spirituality/faith in the Anglican tradition, ensuring that every aspect of our work reflects our unique heritage and enduring mission to enhance the spiritual and material wellbeing of older people most in need."

Responding to the Five Marks of Mission
As an independent, Treaty-aligned organisation that’s part of the wider community of the Anglican Church in Aotearoa, New Zealand and Polynesia, the Foundation is guided by a commitment to deliver its services ‘in a way that enhances the spirituality, cultural diversity and wellness of each person’ and to respond to ‘the cultural, spiritual, physical, social and emotional needs of the whole person’ (as stipulated by our Constitution).

Taking the Anglican Church’s Five Marks of Mission as our guiding principles – and Marks 3 and 4 specifically: ‘To respond to human need by loving service’ and ‘To transform unjust structures of society…’ – we commit our energy and actions in service of those most in need so that we may fulfil the words of Christ: ‘I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly’ (John 10:10).
Our foundation in faith, our place within the Anglican Church and our commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi therefore ensure that spirituality is integral to all that we do – our unique point of difference as a trusted, values-based organisation and credible advocate for vulnerable older people.
A shared mission of care and connection
In our missional outreach, the Foundation works to make a meaningful difference in the lives of older people across the communities of the Three Tikanga of the Anglican Church in Aotearoa, New Zealand and Polynesia. Through collaboration with our diocesan partners in the provision of culturally responsive services and community-based initiatives, we aim to support the spiritual and material wellbeing of kaumātua/seniors in diverse and impactful ways.
At Selwyn Village and the villages formerly owned by the Foundation – in Whangarei, Hillsborough (Auckland), Papakura, Hamilton, Cambridge and Wellington – our village chaplains play an active role in all aspects of community life within the respective independent living and residential aged care settings. Available to residents of all faiths and none, the chaplains offer spiritual and pastoral support and opportunities for contemplation and reflection, according to residents’ needs and preferences.
