Ngā Hononga ki ngā Iwi
“Kaumātua are the cultural anchors of our Iwi and whānau – the keepers of wisdom, knowledge and connection. They have given so much to their communities, yet many are facing barriers that limit their wellbeing and ability to thrive. Through our partnerships with Iwi, The Selwyn Foundation is committed to supporting long-term, meaningful change, ensuring the needs of kaumātua are prioritised so they may age with dignity, respect and mana in the communities they know and love.”

Mātauranga Māori-inspired care solutions
A major work programme is currently underway with six Māori groups across Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, Te Tai Tokerau Northland and Kirikiriroa Hamilton to jointly deliver Māori-led Te Hauora Mahara/memory centres, where elders with mate wareware/dementia and their whānau can, over time, seek assessment, care and support in a dedicated te ao Māori space.
Kaumātua needs assessment research
In 2024/25, the Foundation funded a Ngāti Hine Kaumātua Needs Assessment research project which was conducted by the Kingi Ihaka Research Centre in collaboration with the Ngāti Hine Health Trust. The research highlighted the urgent challenges facing Māori elders, including housing insecurity, health inequities, social isolation and digital exclusion.
Historic kawenata/Memorandum of Understanding
Our landmark kawenata (covenant/Memorandum of Understanding) signed with Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei at our Founders’ Day event on 22 May 2025 was a significant development, affirming our partnership and collaboration on a range of capability development and knowledge-sharing initiatives, and in recognition of their significance as mana whenua.
