Services and facilities
- each resident is provided with his or her own room, we encourage residents to make their room feel as homely as possible and bring their own furniture and belongings
- We supply essential furniture
- each room has safe radiator central heating and rooms include a wardrobe
- a private phone may be installed in any room (rentals are charged to residents through the Selwyn phone service)
- there are several cosy lounges and a sheltered garden area to sit and enjoy the sunshine and flowers
- the care facility has smoke detectors and sprinklers throughout and is regularly tested by a specialist company
- there is an emergency call bell system in bedrooms and toilets
- newspapers can be delivered on request
- money is held on behalf of residents for safekeeping; for use at shop and hairdresser for examples
- appointments with the hairdresser, podiatrist, physiotherapist, dentist, optician or doctor can be arranged, the hairdresser, podiatrist and physiotherapist come to the facility. These are extra services for which a resident pays.
- shopping can be organised at the convenience shop at the main reception in the Macdonald Centre
- all meals are prepared and cooked on site. A qualified dietician oversees the menu and special diets are catered for if required
- if guests visit for lunch or dinner, they can often be catered for if bookings made in advance
- the village café is available for everyone to use
- the care facility is staffed with registered nurses 24 hours a day, seven days a week and they’re assisted by caregivers and other professional staff when necessary, all staff have on-going training with due regard to the particular needs of the current residents in their care, and are well schooled on safety matters
- doctors routinely visit the hospital and are on call at other times
- the village chaplain visits regularly and is available for counselling and support; worship services are held regularly in the hospital
- visiting family members and friends are always welcome any time, any day
- the wider Selwyn Heights facilities are also available to the care facility residents although they may need assistance from family and friends to get there
Activities
There is a wide range of activities on offer to residents for both enjoyment and to maintain mobility. The care facility has its own activities coordinator who, with the help of volunteers provides a range of activities including: carpet bowls, reading to residents or providing large print books, breakfast in bed, listening to classical music, concerts, other entertainment, indoor games, outings, parties, barbeques, pianists and sing-alongs. A village minibus takes residents for drives, and there is a ‘happy hour’ in the care facility each week.
