Retirement - Make yourself at home

Make yourself at home, by The Selwyn Foundation

Retirement villages are catering to prudent people with active lifestyles.

Retirement is undergoing a metamorphosis. The retirement village has come of age and evolved into a thriving community of active retirees pursuing their individual interests.

New Zealand is leading the charge. We’re pioneering the development of independent living retirement villages, and of aged care in general, with countries such as Australia and the United Kingdom looking to New Zealand for best-practice implementation.

The governance of the sector in New Zealand has undergone positive changes in recent years with the Retirement Villages Act 2003, Code of Practice 2008, and the recently created Retirement Villages Residents Association of NZ Inc, all ensuring that over 32,000 retirement village residents across New Zealand are heard and represented.

The most common reaction from people who move into retirement villages is “I wish I’d done this sooner”. Research from the Retirement Commissioner shows 99% of residents being “satisfied” or “very satisfied” with their decision to move into a retirement village.

Residents enjoy the security, lifestyle, companionship and peace of mind that come with retirement village living. Their new home is exactly that – home. Whether it’s a villa or an apartment, they have all the privacy and independence they had previously, but without the worry that comes with being a homeowner in the later stage of life. A pioneer in aged care for over 60 years, The Selwyn Foundation is now further developing the very best all-inclusive service model for the Baby Boomer generation.

Independent living at Selwyn is part of a carefully planned “continuum of care” approach. Residents enjoy a retirement village lifestyle knowing that if their health circumstances change they will have access to rest home, hospital or dementia care within the same village for themselves or their spouse.

At Selwyn, we believe that to care for older people you have to care about them. What also sets us apart is that as a faith-based charitable foundation, any commercial surplus is not paid out as a dividend to shareholders, but is instead distributed to charitable activities or reinvested into additional services and facilities.

The Selwyn Foundation is proud to be at the forefront of the rapidly-growing aged care sector. Stunning village designs, superb building standards, a wonderful array of village amenities, and on-site care services provide an excellent lifestyle.
